Eight is Great.

Super-quick, semi-last-minute anniversary trip to D-Town...for those of you who plan to yell at me for not getting together in the lightning flash we were there. Next time!! ;)

I can't help it. I absolutely must share what's on my heart and flowing through my soul at the moment.

And I promise I'll completely understand the eye rolls, the gag faces, and clicking on the little red X in the left corner of your Macbook Pro.

Because today marks eight years of marriage. And things are about to get mushy.

Eight years.
That's like going to college twice. {But way better}.
In fact, I remember so many telling me to "Live college up, they're the very best years of your life. Nothing will ever compare!" Albeit, this was true to an extent as college was definitely four incredible years. But the very best of my life and nothing more after that?

Luckily, I can say that I disagree.

Now the past eight years, however? Those have truly marked the best of my life to date. It may sound trite, but I simply love who I am, who I've become, since I got married to one special guy eight years ago. I like married life. I really like my husband. And throw having a couple kids in there? Now that's my mecca.

And every passing anniversary, I find myself thinking, No really, how can it get any better? But somehow, it finds a way. I get more and more settled, our friendship grows stronger, I become more knowledgeable of who my soulmate truly is, and our connection and bond only gets deeper. And over these eight years, I've developed more confidence, have become a better person, and have found a love for who I've become. All of this thanks to my better half.

That doesn't go without saying there haven't been plenty of growing pains. Holy moly, we've got all kinds of marriage stretch marks. I mean, we did get married at the ripe ages of 22 and 21. Absolute babies.

We both are completely different people than we were eight years ago. I look back at that young bride and think how naive, how immature, how young I was. It sort of feels like Gabe and I used the medium of marriage to learn who we were not only as a couple, but as individuals. That's quite difficult to do with another person - to navigate life after college, life as a civilian after fighting in two wars as a Marine, life as a married couple, life with responsibilities and adulthood. I had never even picked up a pot or pan, and everything we owned fit in my 97' Honda Civic on the trek to California.

Luckily, we grew together as we "grew up", rather than growing apart. Even after eight years, I still learn new things about Gabe.  We still spend hours talking. Only now, our conversations are much deeper. And our opinions are much stronger, and at times, completely opposite of one another. But it's these conversations that began at ages 17 and 18 as long distance phone calls from my college dorm room and Gabe's bunk in the barracks. It's these conversations of reminiscing on the past, thanking God for the present, and dreaming of the future that keep our marriage happy, alive.

That and the laughter.

Goodness it's so easy to forget to laugh while living the day to day. And today was no different. Our eight year anniversary - the most ordinary of days. Rolled out of bed at 5:15 a.m. {this, I have decided, should absolutely be illegal in all 50 states}, went to work, picked up Lyla, threw dinner together, and spent the evening at home by myself because Gabe had a special work meeting. Woe is me. But. There was quite the perk in our day. We decided to celebrate with a special lunch date. Went to one of our favorite local restaurants, dined al fresco on the cutest little patio, and took an impromptu walk to the donut shop across the street. Because no date is complete without jaywalking, cinnamon streusel & maple donuts, and a latte. And there was a sweet {one-way} gift exchange that made my day. I sure do LOVE my new bracelet, Babe. ;)

Bad decision making: sugary donut treats after already feeling like I might bust at the seams

And we did get to celebrate a couple weeks early by taking a quick {and by quick, I mean quick. As in 24 hours.} trip to our old stomping grounds in Dallas. For the record, this was road trip #3 so far this summer. And I have no shame in admitting that it was more than refreshing to have time alone with my love...without a toddler in tow. Oh my goodness how easy *and quick* road trips can be with just two adults. And conversations without interruptions - who knew?!?

No. I am not actually drinking this beer. Gabe felt I needed a prop.

The moment we got into town we hit up the first local coffee shop we could find for some iced lattes. We did some shopping in the cutest little Bishop Arts District and not only bought Gabe his first professional "man bag", but we also got the kids {yes, kidS} a souvenir of sorts. Of course we stopped for some local brews at a couple of spots, even though I couldn't partake in the fun, and we had some of the best Mexican {and ceviche} I've ever tasted at Mesa Veracruz. We stayed at a lovely hotel downtown, woke up the next morning, and headed to Uptown to the best breakfast place ever -  complete with the some of the most fabulous outdoor seating we've experienced and a unique and tasty toast spread of strawberry butter. Then, and let's be honest the real reason for the trip, we headed straight for the outlets and Ikea.

Duh.

20 weeks preg with babe #2. And no, I didn't intend to look like a mime.

20 weeks...feeling a bit more like 35 weeks.

It's little memories like this one that I tuck away and revisit often.

Life is a whole lot more adventuresome, fun, and sweeter with this guy.

Happy anniversary to my one and only.

Hump Day Happies

I love Wednesdays.

Almost as much as I love fall.

Good ol' hump day.
Nothing but happy on Wednesdays.
All day long.

There's just something about being so close to the weekend.
Sometimes even more exciting than the weekend itself.
Wednesday screams, You're almost there. You can do it.

I just love it.

And this particular Wednesday is my Friday.
Because I'm off tomorrow.
So there's some extra giddies going on over in these here parts.

And you better believe I'm squeezing oodles of fall goodness into the next few days.
So much that I'm sure Gabe and Lyla will never want to look at another pumpkin.
Let's just say our extra-long weekend includes lots of baking, a significant trip to Hobby Lobby, an orchard, and a garage-gate/pumpkin painting party.

A garage-gate you ask?
Gabe's been dying to hook up a tv in our garage.
So we're having a tailgate/watch party to cheer on our CATS.
In our garage.
While painting and crafting on pumpkins.

The anticipation.

So in light of hump day and the joy that ensues, I thought I would share some things that are currently making me happy.

*a.k.a. my current stream of consciousness*

-  I can't get enough pumpkin. {I know, me and the rest of Pinterest.} But seriously. There are so many pumpkin recipes I want to try. I plan to be in the kitchen doing just that tomorrow. And just last week I made some pumpkin chili. It was incredible. Oh. And don't get me started on pumpkin spice lattes. I have a serious problem. {Not to mention a problem with the price. $4.88 for one of those bad boys. Shame on you, Starbucks.}

- Speaking of problems {mostly with self-control}, spending at least 2 lunch breaks a week at Target is not the brainiest move I've ever made. I can honestly say I've never walked out of Target empty-handed. Ever. I mean, have you seen the Threshold line? Or pretty much any little girl outfit? And I just love the Up & Up brand for diapers. But as of yesterday, my problem grew exponentially.  A friend at work introduced me to the app, Cartwheel. Am I the only human on the planet that hadn't heard of this before? You basically get special discounts on certain items and can add the discounts to your "cart". Then once you check out, they scan your phone. And poof. Insta-sale on lots of goodies. Um. What an evil way to trick me into buy everything in the store. Plus my 5% off debit card?

Trouble.

someecards.com - When I went to Target today I only purchased the things on my list and nothing more. Said no one ever.

- A marine friend of Gabe's posted an incredible photo of them from their first deployment in Iraq. I'd never seen it before and must have stared at it for 15 minutes this morning. He was 19 at the time. Actually fighting in a war. While I was in college. Worrying about biology tests. Or what to wear to the weekend's football game. Absolutely crazy to think that we made it through that time period. So proud of my honorable man.

- A good friend recently posted about having to start disciplining her little man. We are definitely at that age. And I have a feeling we are going to be strict ones. We are incredibly blessed with a generally happy and laid back babe who is independent and can entertain herself for hours. However. Some sort of angry demon monster takes over when food is involved. Hungry or not. If she doesn't get food fast enough she throws an all-out tantrum by pounding her fists, kicking her legs, and screaming. Not okay. She is usually pretty good about signing "more". But lately, she's been screaming instead. So we calmly *but sternly* tell her No, Lyla. We don't scream. We say "more". But there have been a few times when I've actually removed her from her high chair until she calms down. Who knew this stuff began so early?

- I have been a cooking machine lately. Well. If you count cooking three nights a week impressive. Because I sure do. Three nights of cooking is incredibly good for us considering our crazy schedules. {And considering my lack of innate domestic abilities.} Plus, I can honestly say I don't think I cooked one time last year. In fact. I'm pretty sure we went an entire year without eating dinner. Anyway. I have gotten back in the habit of finding new recipes or digging up old favorites. I'm actually enjoying it! And I recently read an article on the importance of the concept of family dinner. Studies have shown that families who take the time to sit down and eat dinner together typically have children who are healthier, smarter, and more confident. A high priority in this house. Well, we try at least.

- We may not have a walker, but we sure do have a busy body. This little lady is into every.thing. We are constantly finding rooms in disarray. And I have to say, it's pretty cute. And quite exhausting. All so new to us! We're so proud at how far Miss Beans has come in terms of her motor abilities. She's cruising, squatting to pick things up (while holding onto something), and *gulp* climbing stairs. I'll give you one guess who taught her how to do that.

Yes. I'm aware that we have a half-naked baby. Climbing the most disgusting stairs you've ever seen.
That's quality parenting right there, folks.

Happy Hump Day, All!

Still my #1

My husband is pretty rad.

I meant to write him a super long heart-felt letter, as well as dedicate a post solely for him before I had the babe.

But the babe decided to come 10 days early.

And I never got the chance.

But it is incredibly important for me to *try* to fully express how grateful I am for my sweet husband.

The week leading up to Lyla's birth, I started to get nervous. But not nervous about what you may think. About how to take care of a baby, how to deal with lack of sleep, how to juggle mommy-hood with everyday life, how the heck to make it through labor, how to breastfeed, etc.

Although those things were a bit scary to me, there was really only one thing that really terrified me.

Life was no longer going to be just the two of us.

Gabe and I have been married for six years. And these six years have been so great. We've gotten to live in 4 different states, travel a ton, make amazing life-long friends, switch careers, learn how to communicate with one another, support each other through difficult times, create an an abundance of inside jokes, spend a ridiculous amount of Saturdays sleeping in, and the list goes on. And on.

But most noticeably, we've been able to whatever the heck we want at the drop of a hat.

That is what I was most scared of losing. The spontaneity and...freedom that was us.

Little did I know that life could get even BETTER with a third party. No kidding. My heart grew exponentially larger...and I love my husband even more than I did before. AND we have a little miniature "us" to hang out with...someone who brings us more joy than we ever even thought possible.

Luckily, my fears were completely stifled the moment Lyla entered the world. And with each passing day, I develop more and more joy. Who knew parenting could be this awesome...AND this much fun?!?!

I'm so incredibly smitten. With my two loves.

And even though it's no longer just the two of us, Gabe is still my number one.

Dear Gabe,

There are so many things I love about you. Where do I even begin? Let's go ahead and start at the beginning.

1). You have always been my best friend. Seriously. That's how this all began. So great to have a marriage built on the foundation of friendship. **Oh, and thank you for loving me even when my hair was way too blonde...sorry I convinced you to make yours blonde too.

2). You make me SO proud. With everything from your motivation and drive to grow professionally, your dedication to your family, your eagerness and willingness to grow spiritually, your desire to educate yourself before making decisions, and of course your time spent serving our country. One proud wife.

3). You are a big ol' sweetheart. Always doing sweet, thoughtful things for me. Like surprising me for my 21st birthday (when I thought you were in Iraq) and proposing on a dinner cruise in San Diego, or sending me flowers my first week back at school with a card that read, "Happy First Day of School. Here's to making it two more weeks!" - referring to my pregnancy and the fact that I really, really wanted to go two weeks into the school year. I went into labor 3 days later.

4). You are a heck of a provider. Like when you moved us to 29 Palms, CA to finish out your time in the Marine Corps. Our first apartment didn't have air conditioning or a bed...but it did have roaches. And we used to watch movies on our broken futon using our makeshift "entertainment system" (a.k.a. the laptop). Haha. But seriously... I really do love how you are determined to do whatever it takes to provide for us. Hey, we all have to start somewhere!

5). You have a HUGE heart. You always put others before yourself and give everyone the benefit of the doubt. You are very loyal and would do anything for your friends and family. And you really, really love animals.

6). You love adventure. I've never met anyone who loves the outdoors so much. Makes me really miss living in New England - so much to do! You've taught me to step out and love adventure too. Makes life a whole lot more fun. And makes me excited to make our daughter a little adventurer too.

7). You completely balance me. I'm the crazy in this relationship. You are the calm. The steady. The fearless. Saying goodbye is never easy. Starting over is quite terrifying. Finding out surprising news can shake your world. But you are never shaken. You help open my eyes to potential opportunities. Without you, I'd probably be boring and never take risks.

8). You gave me the most amazing gift I could ever ask for. And she is perfect. She is so lucky to have you as her daddy. And I'm so lucky to have you as my husband.

I thank God for you every single day. Specifically, I thank him for bringing me someone who truly completes me. Someone who makes me whole. Someone who is my balance. My supporter. My best friend.

I love you.

Happy Baby Mooniversary

So. I've actually been back from vacation for a week.

Went straight into an insanely busy week with all day school trainings, homework that made me want to pull my hair out (what teacher has homework over summer break???), doctors appointments, labor and delivery classes, and of course catching up on laundry and housekeeping.

But I'm back in action.

We had THE most amazing trip to Aruba.

Before we left, we heard from several world traveler friends, "Aruba is our FAVORITE place to visit" or "Aruba has the most stunning beaches you've ever seen."

Nothing but the truth, my friends.

We originally had plans to go to Italy or Costa Rica this summer. But then 8 months ago, I found out a teeny little bit of surprising news that would change our plans. ;)

So, we decided that we should do something a bit more relaxing.

So our plans changed to celebrate our BABYMOON (last vacation before Baby Lyla)/6 Year Anniversary with two of our most favorite people in Aruba.

And it couldn't have been more perfect.

Here are just a few pics of the first day we were there.

We celebrated 6 years at our own little private table.

On the beach.

3 feet from the ocean.

Until the sun set.

It was PERFECT.

More Aruba pics soon to come...
